Gentle Walks Around Ullapool With Beautiful Highland Views

The North West Highlands of Scotland are well known for spectacular landscapes, and nothing beats experiencing these places on foot. 

There are many wonderful walks in and around Ullapool where you can immerse yourself in the breathtaking scenery at a gentle pace. 

Walks Around Ullapool From The Village

Some of the most rewarding walks start right from Ullapool village. Within minutes, you can be looking out over Ullapool and the surrounding landscape from a completely different perspective.

Ullapool Hill

Ullapool Hill walk starts from the village and is a short but fairly steep climb. Your efforts are rewarded with stunning views over Ullapool, Loch Broom and the surrounding hills.

Loch Achall

Walkable from the village, this longer route takes you inland into Glen Achall and Loch Achall. It may be close to Ullapool, but it feels like a different world once you are there.

Walks Around Ullapool A Drive Away

If you feel like going further than the village, there are plenty of gentle walks around Ullapool that are well worth the drive.

Rhue Lighthouse

Just a few minutes’ drive from Ullapool, Rhue Lighthouse is a stunning, short coastal walk. The walk leads down to the lighthouse, with expansive views down Loch Broom and out to sea towards the Summer Isles. It’s especially lovely as the sun goes down.

Inverbroom

A short drive inland from Ullapool, Inverbroom offers secluded tree-lined paths alongside the River Broom.

Corrieshalloch Gorge

Around 20 minutes’ drive south of Ullapool, Corrieshalloch Gorge is an easy walk through peaceful surroundings leading to a dramatic 60 metre deep gorge, viewed from an historic suspension bridge. 

Knockan Crag

Around 20 minutes’ drive north of Ullapool, Knockan Crag sits within the North West Highlands Geopark. The walk features some of the most ancient rocks in the world and stunning views over Coigach and Assynt.

Stac Pollaidh

Around 30 minutes’ drive from Ullapool in Coigach, Stac Pollaidh is a more challenging walk with a steep path but absolutely worth the effort. The extraordinary scenery will stay in your memory forever.

The Bone Caves

About 30 minutes’ drive north of Ullapool in Assynt, the Bone Caves take you back in time. The walk leads through a remote, rugged landscape to the Bone Caves, where ancient remains of polar bear, reindeer and lynx have been found.

Flowerdale Glen

Around an hour’s drive west from Ullapool, Flowerdale Glen is a lovely walk near Gairloch that meanders through a sheltered glen to a beautiful waterfall.

Beinn Eighe Woodland Trail

Just over an hour’s drive from Ullapool, the Beinn Eighe Woodland Trail in the Torridon area offers ancient Caledonian pinewoods and wonderful views across Loch Maree.

The North West Highlands are known for their dramatic landscapes, and the walks around Ullapool show just how accessible they can be.

You do not need to go far or push yourself too hard to experience something truly special.
